After A. Rod got traded, both Seattle and Texas had better records. Until the MFY unsaddled themselves from A. Rod, they will be doomed.
How 'bout this: the RS were never planning on acquiring A. Rod in the first place. They went after him knowing that the MFY would try for him as well. They purposefully offered him just slightly less than the union would allow, thus inciting the Yankees to overpay for his hide.
Likewise, they dangled Manny on waizers, knowing he wouldn't be snatched up thus creating the illusion that the RS were prepared to do anything to get A. Rod.
The truth: the RS were prepared to do anything to get the MFY to spend money on the accursed A. Rod.
